I was fortunate enough to be asked to facilitate a weekend workshop on housing revitalization along the Waters Ave corridor. I had the pleasure of co-facilitating the workshop with Mike Weikert and Liz Ogbu. I also lectured on how the Alabamboo Make & Ride came from an idea to a real world project promoting positive change. Info about our workshop topic, Empowering Renewal Many residents within the Waters Avenue study area fear that even with an influx of resources and attention to the Waters Avenue business district, the sheer quantity of derelict residential buildings in the blocks surrounding Waters Avenue will hinder a healthy residential revitalization. With so many homes vacant and falling apart, neighbors feel threatened by the decay, and by the crime that such derelict homes can foster. How can a burden be transformed into an asset for the community? Within the choices of demolition, renovation, and deconstruction, how can design facilitate the transformation of of decrepit building stock into a source of wealth, well being, renewal and pride for the local residents? Belfast, Maine During a week in March, a group of AIB graphic design students participated in a 5 Day Blitz that focused on re-imagining the Waterfall Arts Fallout Shelter after water flooded the basement. Prior to the water disaster, the basement at Waterfall Arts was a fully-functioning performance space known as the Fallout Shelter—a venue for musicians, artists and community members to utilize as well as come together. The students came up with the B.O.M.B. campaign to raise awareness and ask for help from locals to offer resources, time, tools, and money to get the Fallout shelter up and running again. The group also developed interior design renovation plans for Waterfall Arts. The objective of the class was to rethink the traditional/print-only student art magazine that showcases work from all of the departments within the two-year art school of that year. I conducted various Think Wrong exercises that encouraged the students to think big about what "340 High St. Student Art Magazine" is and can be. Discussion touched on expanding to social media campaigns, local business involvement and even getting Oprah to promote the magazine. This is a semester long project. Final magazine will be published in May 2011. Providence, Rhode Island Better World by Design We separated the over 40 attendees into groups of six, making sure we had a few Providence residents in each group to provide a level of familiarity during the breakout session. We kick-started the groups by asking them the following questions, + How can we take the model of projectOPEN and apply it to Providence? + What resources and services does Providence provide that might work well with this existing model? + Does it have to be in a folded map? + What other forms can this resource take? They asked us to come in and help brainstorm different ways of rethinking their 4 year old conference. Great ideas surfaced that we hope to see in October 2011. Providence, Rhode Island Myself, Ben Gaydos & Karen Stein of goodgood, and Matt White of Dirk+Weiss facilitated two Project M workshops during the Better World by Design conference. We conducted a Think Wrong workshop on Friday, producing 5 ideas/products/services. Sunday, during the Rapid Prototyping session, we implemented those ideas in a more tangible, realistic product.
