		<description>Design for Good,
U of M Flint 3-day workshop
Facilitator
Flint, MI
May '13

bbqflint.tumblr.com / Flickr set

Design for Good was a 3-day workshop offered at U of M Flint. The goal of the workshop was to explore the role of how design could create positive change in a community.

Co-facilitated by Ben Gaydos, Assistant Professor Communication &#38; Visual Arts of U of M Flint, Julia Yezbick, and Image Flint's Artist-in-Residence, Eric Hinds on a project to re-imagine Flint’s urban green spaces.

Over the course of 3 days, a group of participants (community members, students, faculty and staff of the university) were exposed to various exercises and practical design methodologies that were used to create BBQ FLINT, an opportunity in "Building Better Parks with Dogs &#38; Dialogue."

Flint has 67 parks within the city limits yet one person maintaining them. A Flint resident is only 1/4 mile away from any Flint park. Our group focused on Mott Park and the Mott Park Neighborhood Association in hopes of figuring out why this particular park "is in pretty good shape compared to other parks in Flint."

We launched BBQ FLINT to help build a framework for Flint residents to share knowledge, tips, and ideas on what makes a strong community—a strong community that can come together and organize around a local need, in this case, up-keeping their nearby park. BBQ FLINT can be a framework that can be replicated by other Flint residents and the parks they live near.

The concept for BBQ FLINT will be used by Eric Hinds in his proposal for the Flint Master Planning Process.

		<description>Hi! I'm Marc.

I'm a social designer, creative facilitator, and a true believer that thinking wrong can create a better future. I help people move their ideas forward by teaching them unique strategies and activating their creativity to work on projects for the greater good. I also work in teams to produce and design experiences/projects that focus on creating positive change in the world.

WHAT I DO
Produce
Create environments perfect for collaborative love making, guaranteed to get people "in the mood" to share their ideas with others. View Produce projects.

Facilitate
Push people to think wrong in order to come up with unique solutions that challenge the status-quo. View Facilitate projects.

Design
Take ideas off of Post-It notes and visualize them in a rapid prototyping environment to build excitement and momentum around new concepts. View Design projects.

Execute
Use simple strategy with today's resources that will turn heads and grab people's attention—like a naked guy walking down a sidewalk. View Execute projects.

KIND WORDS
Testimonials from workshop participants, colleagues, and collaborators.

"Our program and university were lucky to have had the privilege of having Marc as an adjunct faculty. He took naturally to teaching and gave way more than was expected. He cared about each of the students and personally went out of his way to ensure that they were learning the skills necessary to become designers today. He created challenging projects, creative projects, and brought real world wisdom into our program. He is an excellent educator and facilitator, super creative, and inspiring."

Jason Dilworth
Assistant Professor at SUNY Fredonia
Alabamboo Make &#38; Ride team member

-----------

"I had the pleasure co-facilitating a workshop with Marc. He demonstrated a great ability to skillfully shape and guide the workshop. He also brings a wonderful level of creative thinking through exercise like the “think wrong” activity."

Liz Ogbu
Scholar in Residence
Center for Art and Public Life, California College of the Arts
Facilitated together at Design Ethos 2012

-----------

"I worked with Marc on a project to design and run an innovation workshop. Marc was a pleasure to work with, collaborative, creative, professional and always looking for ways to generate the best outcome. He understands the innovation process at a deep level, and how best to unlock the creativity of groups. I look forward to the next opportunity I have to work with him."

Co-Founder of Global Leadership Lab
Co-Produced EdgeLab: Catalyze

-----------

"Marc knows how to make a room interesting, and inspire everyone in it. When generating ideas, Marc knows how to push people into new connections. Marc is also realistic and not only emphasized that ideas need executable plans but provided support months after our Future Blitzes."

Hannah Burn
Vice Chair of Communications
Steering Committee for A Better World by Design '12

-----------

"One of the most popular workshops, however, was Prototyping Neighborhoods, run by Marc O'Brien and crew. Here, attendees explored the meaning of a "neighborhood," and, in typical "think wrong" fashion, did everything but. Sunday's workshop built upon the ideas generated from Friday's Thinking Wrong about Neighborhoods session, taking those concepts and developing them into fully fleshed-out prototypes."

Carly Ayres
Contributing writer for Core77
Writing about A Better World by Design '12

-----------

"I had the pleasure of attending the Future Blitz that Marc facilitated at the 2012 Better World by Design conference. It was my first experience participating in a creative facilitation workshop, and I found it both extremely challenging, yet exhilarating. Marc beautifully walked the delicate fine line of really pushing participants to fully engage in the process and reach deep for creative possibilities they didn't even know existed, while also providing a safe and supportive environment so that the whole experience didn't feel completely overwhelming. He was also highly attuned to the mood and energy levels of the participants, throwing out various twists and variations on our blitzes to keep us both motivated and inspired. I walked out of that workshop feeling completely exhausted, but also feeling weirdly empowered and proud of myself. I also viewed myself for the first time as being much more innately creative than I had ever really thought. I think many others felt that way, and I give full credit to Marc for giving us that experience."

"Excellent, well run class in a fantastic setting. Marc is a skilled facilitator and led us through a series of exercises to stretch our minds and get us thinking wrong."

Jessica Robinson

"How to Think Wrong"

-----------

"I've worked with Marc in several different capacities, from co-leading workshops to run-of-the-mill design projects. Marc's always energetic and ambitious with a "get shit done" attitude. He can really motivate a group of creative individuals looking for inspiration and get you to question everything you thought was right. FSU."

Brian W. Jones
Project M Advisor
Founder of Welcome™

-----------

"At Project M, Marc was an articulate, adventurous, and detail-oriented facilitator. Most importantly, Marc was an excellent listener, a quality which few individuals hold to his extent. In addition, he holds an innate ability to facilitate and advise "Think Wrong" exercises into real world tangible solutions for at-hand problems. I would highly recommend Marc if you are looking for a beyond passionate educator &#38; advisor for legitimate positive change and social impact around the world."

Christopher Burbank

"Marc became a mentor to my students during our project together. He even took the time to check in with us over Skype several times well after his part of the project was completed. I would have him return every year if I could."

On April 27th, GOOD SF celebrated Neighborday. We proved an opportunity for people in SF to come and meet their neighbors with fun, fast-paced rounds of speed-dating.* We provided prompts that encouraged conversations and community discovery.

Over 100+ people showed up and stay for a few rounds of speed dating. It feels good knowing that we proved a space for new friendships to be made.

Check out the Eventbrite with more info about the event.

It was great working with my old colleagues and friends at Future during the second day of CompostModern. I was one of 12 facilitators helping run a Future Blitz with over 200+ participants from the conference.

The challenge for the day: "Given that resilience is the ability to take a punch in the face, how might we demonstrate resilience in the world?"

Our group came up with UpLift, a "story-powered elevator." Read a recap on GOOD.is about the 2nd day of CM.

Unplug &#38; Ride is a personal project I created a few months ago. U&#38;R is a practice in unplugging from the distractions of updates, phone calls, and full inboxes.

We are hearing more and more conversations about how people are recognizing that smart phones, social media, and the like are making us less social and less productive. I want to encourage people to unplug, go outside, and experience life without being connected to gain a new sense of awareness. This isn't an anti-internet initiative, but more of a "balance-focused" life approach.

I invited friends to participate in the UnplugYou workshop to help explore ideas and conversations for taking Unplug &#38; Ride to the masses. Our challenge for the day, "How might we encourage our friends to unplug?"

After a few exercises, each group redefined the challenge to:
"How might we enable our friends to embrace their offline self?"
"How might we encourage more human interaction in a cafe setting?"
"How might we fulfill our social needs offline?"

Three concepts were developed that answered those challenges. Smash Mob, a movement to encourage people to come out of the "internet closet." The Six Pack Bus, an entertaining mobile shuttle bus that drives groups of friends around SF while leaving their smart phones with the driver. The Social Cafe, a laptop free coffee shop/bar where the baristas and bartenders act as conversation facilitators, introducing customers to one another based on similar interests.

This workshop validated the my idea of taking U&#38;R to a wider audience. I'm now thinking how I can take these new ideas, along with my own from U&#38;R and work on a bigger initiative.

Not For Sale has had a successful six-month fellowship program for the last few years. I was asked to lead the current fellows and staff to come up with new ways of taking the six-month program to the next level.

After initial idea generation, four groups focused on areas including;
- How/where to market the fellowship program
- How to make it more productive for NFS
- The impact of the fellowship program within NFS
- How this can be more of a pioneering element within NFS
